World Post Day
October 9, World Post Day, is being observed across the globe today. The official theme for World Post Day 2026 is "One postal network, infinite possibilities."
This day reminds us of the importance of the postal sector in people's daily lives and in business operations, as well as its immense contribution to global social and economic development.
World Post Day commemorates October 9, 1874, the date the Universal Postal Union (UPU), one of the world's oldest international organizations, was founded in Switzerland. Today, the organization comprises 192 member states, forming a unified global network that connects billions of people.
Serbia became a member of the Universal Postal Union at its very inception on October 9, 1874, during the congress in Bern.
The then-Principality of Serbia was among the 22 founding nations that signed the Treaty of Bern, which established this first universal organization. This means Serbia has been a full member since the Union's first day of existence, marking a 152-year history within the organization.
This year's theme focuses on the transformation of the postal service in the digital age and the limitless possibilities it offers through three key areas:
· Comprehensive connectivity through addressing: Access to an official address remains a fundamental human right, enabling every individual to participate in modern society, access public services and engage in global e-commerce.
· Financial inclusion for all: With over 600,000 post offices worldwide, the Post is often the only institution providing citizens in rural and remote areas with access to basic financial services, savings and payment systems.
· The power of partnership and cooperation: Through modernization and reform, Posts are evolving into innovative logistics and digital hubs capable of meeting the complex demands of 21st-century customers.
In his official message, Universal Postal Union Director General Masahiko Metoki emphasized that the Post is no longer merely a carrier of letters, but a key driver of social cohesion and economic progress, ensuring that no one is left off the global map.
The postal sector continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability, successfully combining traditional reliability with modern digital solutions. World Post Day is also an opportunity to express deep gratitude to the millions of postal workers whose daily efforts and dedication sustain this vast global network.
