Extraordinary UPU Congress takes place in Riyadh
The Fourth Extraordinary Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between the 1st and 5th of October 2023. The Republic of Serbia delegation was represented by Marija Vučinić of the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications, Ljubomir Ostojić of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RATEL), Bojana Nikolić and Olja Jovičić of the PE „Post of Serbia“.
At the Congress, several historical decisions were reached that will impact the global postal sector, including revolutionary agreements on the opening of the UPU to private postal operators and wider postal sector players, climate action targets, modernization plan for postal financial services and changes of the UPU Convention aimed at the improvement of the quality of transmission of postal items containing goods.
The main topic at the congress was the enlargement and formalization of the UPU’s relations with wider postal sector players, including private businesses. The decisions reached will make it possible for the private postal operators and companies to access certain sets of products and services under the UPU umbrella, in order to incentivize networking and facilitate the exchange of postal items between national postal operators and private postal operators, with the goal to improve the quality of postal services all around the globe.
